Wasps or yellow jackets kept bugging the kids while they were eating outside. The kids kept thinking they were bees, but I explained that they were yellow jackets or wasps and they were attracted to their lunch meat. Bees usually are attracted to sweet things and bright colors.
Later that day I was able to catch both types of insects so I could show them the differences. One is smooth, one is furrier with pollen on his legs. One bites and stings (continuously) whereas bees sting once then die. Next time I’ll try to show them the difference between a nest and a hive.
One of the other teachers told me that they read that people who allergic to bee stings are often not also allergic to wasp bites and visa versa. Fascinating! The Impressive Difference between Bees and Wasps
orI was able to transfer the bugs by removing the capsule from the bugzooka and transferring the trapped insect into another container.. all while it was wrapped in a clear plastic bag with a knot tied to it.
